A Few Beers & Couple Glasses of Wine ...

... means it's Beer news time.

Blacksburg Brewdo (thanks to Hokie Guru)

From BCO Pix2
A brew fest in Blacksburg! A good 15 year too late!

The Blacksburg Partnership, a non-profit economic development organization, announces Blacksburg Brew Do, the area's first ever craft beer festival. The event will be held at the First and Main Town Center on Saturday, October 24, 2009, from noon to 6:00 pm.

American craft brewing is a rapidly expanding industry. Brewers are often small, independent and traditional in the way they produce beer. Blacksburg Brew Do will welcome the best in craft brewers from the Mid Atlantic region, offering dozens of varieties. The event promises a day of great beer tasting, food from Blacksburg’s best restaurants, and live entertainment. And what’s better than Blacksburg in the Fall?

If a football weekend, I'd orgasm!

The breweries:
Bull and Bones
Blacksburg Brewing
Flying Dog
Highland Brewing
Shooting Creek
Big Daddy Brewing
Jefferson Street Brewing
The River Co.
Roanoke Railhouse

I would look fwd to Shooting Creek and The River Co the most, not cause I think they are the best ... just most curious. I know the River Co.'s Head Brewer.

Bell's Mini Kegs

Other than Oberon wheat, not sure which else is mini-kegged, but God bless if I can find a 2 hearted in a min keg. My wife will be peeling my drunk ass off the floor!

Life & Limb and Limb & Life (a Sierra Nevada & Dogfish Head collaboration)

From BCO Pix2
This fall, independent craft brewers, Sierra Nevada Brewing and Dogfish Head, will release two collaborative beers. Limb & Life -a draft-only beer – will debut in October; with Life & Limb 24oz bottles and limited draft to follow in November.

Life & Limb is a 10% ABV strong beer that defies style characteristics-brewed with pure maple syrup from the Calagione family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown on the Grossman “farm” at the brewery in Chico. The beer is alive with yeast-a blend of both breweries’ house strains-bottle conditioned for added complexity and shelf life, and naturally carbonated with birch syrup fresh from Alaska; it is the first beer we know of ever to use birch syrup in the brew. If stored under good conditions, this rich, full-bodied beer should age well for years. Life & Limb will be available in 24-oz. bottles and limited draft starting this November.

Limb & Life is a companion to the big beer-an acorn off the larger tree. It is a 5% ABV small beer-a low-gravity beer made using the residual sugar as “second runnings” from the first larger brew, fortified with American hops. This is a session beer. Its big brother is a sipper. Limb & Life will be a limited draft-only product, a prelude to the bigger beer, available in select bars and restaurants this October.

Pair Beer to Indie Music (thanks to the Professor)
From BCO Pix2
The way I see it, if I can't spend a Thursday afternoon regaling you with stories from the road I might as well provide you with some beer recommendations. To make this exercise even more fun, I've gone and paired the beers with food and albums, so that you can enjoy them to their fullest potential.
Russian River Pliny The Elder - An Imperial/Double IPA (IIPA or I2PA) brewed in Santa Rosa, CA. Dark gold color with a bouquet of citrus flavors in the aroma. The flavor is all hops. Very complex and refined, and even I -- a self-proclaimed aficionado -- had never experienced anything quite like it. A sharp, bitter finish completes this testament to how great an IPA taste. I drank mine alongside a peperoni pizza from Foliero's here in Los Angeles, but I imagine any quality pizza from a wood or coal oven would suffice. There's something about crisp, hoppy beers and pizza or pasta that compliment each other. For its complexity and slightly above average (8%) ABV, I'd pair this beer with a psychedelic, Easter Everywhere by the 13th Floor Elevators. If not, try the California band Ancestors' 2008 record, Neptune With Fire.

I will have to find that Pliny. Not sure if it's in WI. Thanks, Mr.
