Random Musings 2 Days in a Row

Break up the Nationals

Proud to be a nats fan I think ... back to back wins after losing a game where they scored 11 and had 5 home runs. Now 5-15 and only 8 games back after 20 ... could this be a real live Major League team?

I take back all this talk of me being a Walgreen's Natinals fan I said 2 days ago. Yes, the logo's are a bit similar.

vs
From BCO Pix2

Hmmmm ... not good, but it beats the Dodge Rame logo and it's similar counterpart.
From BCO Pix2

Any way a mini family vacation to NOVA may be in the works and a Nats game will be on the agenda, that and the zoo. Orangutan crossing!!

Hell Yeah ... Hop Rod Rye
From BCO Pix2
Now available in 12 oz 4 packs in the 1o spot range. Great for the BCO, some days I only want (ok, I want more than 1 beer but diet says no) a 12 oz not a duece duece.

Musings

VT's O

From BCO Pix2
Talented at every position and only center will be worse than last year (TT needs to stay healthy or all bets are off.) The fluff piece by HD (which fails to mention how good the team could have been w/an O) lays it on thick for Stiney. If the O sucks this year, even Beamer can't keep him, right? I am usually a bit pessimistic, but ... I am starting to think the O will be good. That said week 1, it might not be. Bammer's D will be great.

Hopefully soon I will take a hard look at it, I know FBS wants me to write something but I got no one to trash.

Bammer vs VT game
From BCO Pix2
I need to decide this week if I want to buy 4 tix, da Thrill, bobble and dirt ... interested? The Braves are in town vs Cincy + the other "clubs" downtown. Whattya think, boys weekend?

Caps Win!
From BCO Pix2
Great game and happy for all my NOVA friends. Hope I can be bandwagoneer and slip into a 2nd round game.

Beer Fest
From BCO Pix2
A 2 day event, 5k showed up (virtual sellout, standing room only) on Saturday, less than 2k on Sunday. BCO isn't smart but he did pick the right day to drink. Bear Republic, Bells, Stella, Sierra Nevada, Starr Hill, Southern Tier, Widmer, Lagunitas, Avery and I am sure a few more all sampled. Luckily, we could stand in the shade the whole day.

Random BCO Junk
Weight

+ 4 lbs from the weigh in on Saturday which was 183. I want anywhere from 185-190. Doesn't take much to put it back on.

Busy Life

Being a parent is busy ... weekly violin lessons, twice a week swimming lessons, trips around the neighborhood pulling the kids with the bike and teaching a 3 year old how to ride a bike. Cooking out the window? Eating right out the window? Blogging out the window? Who knew and the 18 month old isn't even doing anything yet!

Found Beers and Lost Weight

No to Spring game, Yes to Beer Festival

From BCO Pix2
One of my favorite things of spring ... the Annual Beer Festival in Norfolk. Cost $30, gonna be hot in the mid 80's (sunscreen for the noggin) and packed but I love it. A few less breweries than usual (economic times) but still enough for me! Over 2 days this year, Saturday and Sunday, I'll be hitting the Sunday one. Not as good as going to the VT spring game but I'll just have to make do, one beer at a time.

Here is some of the breweries I am excited about.
  • Bear Republic Brewing Company (CA)
  • Bell's Brewery (MI)
  • Clipper City Brewing Company (MD)
  • Dogfish Head Craft Brewery (DE)
  • Firestone Walker Brewing Company (CA)
  • Founder's Brewing Company (MI)
  • Green Flash Brewing Company (CA)
  • Shmaltz Brewing Company (NY)
  • Sierra Nevada Brewing Company (CA)
  • Southern Tier Brewing Company (NY)
  • Starr Hill Brewing Company (Charlottesville)
  • Stone Brewing Company (CA)
  • Victory Brewing Company (PA)
  • Williamsburg Ale Werks (Williamsburg)

90 Long Days of Eating Right
From BCO Pix2
Well the biggest loser competition in my office (by percentage) is officially over tomorrow. I've dropped from 221 to 184 ... 37 pounds or 16.7% and will lose. Bobble will win losing probably in the lower 40's (we started at the exact same weight, fat ass.) I could have gone stupid, stopped drinking water, got some plastics, sweats and ran a few miles and sweated out 5+ lbs of water weight. That would gain me 500 bones and keep me from losing a 100, but that's a bit disingenuous and to be honest I am to lazy to run that much. So for a hundred bucks I am now back to my weight midway thru my freshman year of college and saved a shit ton of cash on not eating out.

I did no cheating with chemicals, strictly burning more energy and eating right. Time to shop for the yellow speedo for the summer!

A pre-congrats to Bobble, he earned and worked harder than me, but he didn't get it for free. We will celebrate in style Sunday at the beer fest above!

Odds n Ends

BCO Scare of the Month

From BCO Pix2
Some hack $EC website tried to scare the college football public saying the College Game Day group was getting broke up. Fowler out, Ravech in. Corso out, Holtz in, Herbie out ... for Lawd knows who. Well EDSB hammered that rumor, they set em straight.
After some actual talking to our sources, the rumor of any changes to Gameday is mostly crap
Original story has been deleted and replaced with a correction link here.

Like the BCO always says, the $EC is full of liars and cheats, even their bloggers.

Southern Pigskin Spring Preview
From BCO Pix2
Something I cooked up in a hour or so last night ... here.
Spring is in the air and for college football fans that means spring football and spring tailgating Unfortunately my schedule is not going to allow me to attend the VT Spring football game this Saturday. I wish I could be there for there are a few things I would be on the look out for specifically. Like most spring games, the Maroon vs White game is very vanilla, base offenses and defenses. That said, there are things you can gauge after watching the kids run around. Virginia Tech is considered by some to be a darkhorse national championship contender. We shall see. The Hokies have a very tough schedule and I want to see the new starters and last year’s offensive issues addressed on the field. From the previous scrimmage, reports and gossip optimism for the offense is very high...
What I would look for if I weren't a lame ass and went to the spring game. There is still an outside chance but it's going to be hot and what do I do with a 18month old all day? i.e. can I still get my drinks on?

Yep, this is my Second a MLB team, the Washington Natinals
From BCO Pix2
Pick and Link should be sufficient. SAD.

Wind Tunnel

Everyone is bombing balls at the new Yankee Stadium at a video game like rate. My weather website did a pretty cool New Yankee Stadium article here.
Although the field dimensions of the new stadium are exactly that of the old stadium, the shell of the new stadium is shaped differently. AccuWeather.com meteorologists also estimate that the angle of the seating tiers in the new stadium could have a different effect on wind motion across the field. The old Yankee stadium had more vertically stacked tiers and a large upper deck, acting like a solid wall in effect, which would cause the wind to swirl more and be less concentrated. The new Yankee stadium's tiers are less stacked, making a less sharp slope from the top of the stadium to the field. This shape could enable winds to blow across the field with less restriction. In addition, the slope of the seating would also lead to a "downslope" effect in the field which, depending on wind direction, would tend to cause air to lift up in the right field. Fly balls going into right field during a gusty west wind would be given more of a lift thus carrying the ball farther out into right field. If the stadium seating tier shape is indeed the main issue, games will only be affected during times with the winds are from a westerly direction and above 10 mph. This typically occurs during the spring and the middle to late fall. The calmer weather during the summer should lead to a smaller number of home runs. In the meantime, the home run derby may continue.

Almost ... The Dead Zone

No, not this dead ... no one is trippin' out to 'Franklin' Tower' right now.

From BCO Pix2

The Dead Zone being the time when college football (season & spring drills) and college basketball are over and it's nascar, futbol, golf and baseball. Baseball gets my attn the other 3 not even remotely. Not sure which of the 3 is more boring.

From BCO Pix2
The NFL draft I sorta watch ... ok, I won't, but almost would. I mean who doesn't love watching the JETS pick in the top 10, get all jacked for their pick only to know he is going to suck? The days I laid around the house drinking beer and watching it are long gone (blame the wife and kids on that one.) Hell, if not for them I'd do that every Saturday and Sunday anyway.

I will write something about VT and a lil about uva for SouthernPigskin tomorrow nite ... not sure yet. Will post when it is linked. I will blog about the spring practice happenings of the Hokies when the dead zone is officially here.

In other words, expect some gaps in the blog. Will try to do a couple a week and update the wiminz Mon-Fri.

Beer Worthy News

Tournament of IPA's x2
Great Lakes National IPA Championship

From BCO Pix2
Big Sky IPA ... has it's 1 shining moment coming out of no where and winning the whole thing. Complete bracket here.

BCO did very, very awful in this bracket, worse than my basketball tournament ones. Link here. My final 4, darkhorses got hammered in the drink off.

Atlanta Journal
Constitution Tournament of IPA's
From BCO Pix2
Local flavor gets some home job loving and knocks out a bunch of other better beers.

SWEETWATER IPA
the AJC champion, beating out many other good IPA's but knocking out these below comes as a shock or inside job ...

  • WYERBACHER HOPS INFUSION IPA
  • DOGFISH HEAD 60 MINUTE IPA
  • VICTORY HOP DEVIL ALE
  • LAGUNITAS IPA
  • STONE IPA
  • GREAT DIVIDE TITAN IPA
  • BISON ORGANIC IPA

Why I call shenanigans I do love that Sweetwater is making head way in the deep souf ... the revolutioni s coming to nascar country, all good beer are winners here.

Nationals Step Up, Sign Some Big Name Free Agents
From BCO Pix2
Well the Nats step up behind the field of play at least. They have added some big name beers to their already solid (not great) lineup. Link here.

From BCO Pix2
The List

Bottles: Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Lite, Coors Light, Bell's Oberon American Wheat Ale, Harpoon Summer Ale.

Draft: Peroni, Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA, Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, Southampton Triple Abby Style Ale, Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen, Williamsburg Tavern Brown Ale, Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Lager.

The beer in Italics, the BCO approves of ... A LOT. I am going to be tore down next time I go, 90 min followed by Arrogant Bastard on multiple back2backs spell a very unhappy Mrs. BCO.

Utah Legalizes Homebrewing
From BCO Pix2
Link here. You know the state where a man could have multiple wives, many very, very young for the longest time and you couldn't brew your own beer. Weird state.
Utah legislators have legalized beer making at home. Now it's official, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. signed HB 51 ... as of May 12th, 2009 Utah's homebrewers can legally brew beer at home!

During the two year process, Utah legislator’s heard testimony that emphasizing that homebrewing was federally legalized in 1979 and every state except Utah, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Mississippi and Alabama have decriminalized the hobby of homebrewing.

Balmer Beer Week
From BCO Pix2
Balmer following Philly's lead is getting into a week of beer. I approve and I am sure Bobble does too. Road trip? Oct 8-18th (which is longer than a week but we are talking about people from Balmer, so it's close enough.) Links here and here. The Wood Real Ale Festival Oct. 17 really intrigues me.
The organizers of Baltimore Beer Week, a 10-day October festival celebrating all things beery, have unveiled the event's logo, featuring an image of the Washington Monument in downtown Baltimore. Atop the monument, the nation’s original tribute to the First President, is a figure of George Washington holding a mug.

Washington did brew beer, and also rum and whiskey, at his Mount Vernon estate.

Modeled after the recently concluded celebration in Philadelphia that drew thousands of participants, Baltimore Beer Week will sing the praises of the region’s strong brewing culture, said Joe Gold, one of the organizers of the event. "We’ve got a rich history of brewing, a strong crop of brewers, and legions of knowledgeable beer drinkers here," Gold said.

Two highlights will be the Brewers Association of Maryland Oktoberfest October 10, when a dozen Maryland breweries pour some 75 beers at the Timonium Fairgrounds, and the Society for Preservation of Beers from the Wood Real Ale Festival Oct. 17, where some 50 cask-conditioned ales will be tapped.

More Memorial Day Beer Options from Oskar Blues!
From BCO Pix2
Love some Dale's Pale Ale from OB in the OBX, now an easy drinking Pilsner to be added to a line that includes a great Stout, Scotch Ale and IPA beers. Nice, hope it makes it's way to Va by the end of May.
Oskar Blues Brewery is releasing a new pilsner beer in cans.

Mama's Little Yella Pils will be available at beer retailers in Colorado and 22 other states, company officials said.

"Mama's is made with hearty amounts of pale malt, German specialty malts, and a blend of traditional Saaz and 21st century Bavarian hops," the Lyons-based brewer said in a press release. "Unlike mass-market pilsners, Mama's is made of 100% malted barley and no corn or rice."

"While it's rich with Czech flavor, Mama's gentle hopping and 5.3% ABV make it a satisfying but lower alcohol beer -- by Oskar Blues standards -- that's perfect for warm-weather drinking."

The beer will retail for approximately $8.99 a sixpack.

I have been trying quite a few beers in cans to bring something new to the beach and so far only 1 has been giving Dale's a shot. More and more craft beer is going can and that's pretty damn cool.

10 Cheap Beers in Wisconsin, some Tasty, some Not!

Are times this tough Professor Andy? Link here.

In these tough economic times, people are cutting back left and right, looking for areas to scrimp and save. Five-course meals are giving way to super value meals, and at home, name-brand groceries are being replaced by generics.

But for beer drinkers, replacing your Berghoff with "The Beast" may not be such a great value proposition. Unless your idea of a good beer is anything warm and foamy, served in a plastic cup at frat party, you simply won't stand for bad beer -- recession or otherwise.

Here's a list of 10 totally drinkable locally-owned, brewed and/or inspired Wisconsin beers that won't break the bank.

  • Blatz Light
  • Hamm's
  • Huber Bock
  • La Crosse Lager
  • Leinenkugel's Original
  • Mickey's Malt Liquor
  • Miller High Life
  • Pabst Blue Riboon
  • Point Special
  • Schlitz
I can tell you that I can enjoy a High Life from time to time but Blatz is awful, worse than Bud Light awful, it drinks like it looks in that picture above.

but a Wisconsin brew I do want .....

HokieJayBee does Spring Round Table Q&A too....

First off, if BCO can find a way, link this post down to your posted answers on the round table Q&A, or even just re-post your March Madness FF prediction post so it's newer and still the headliner for the blog over the weekend. I'm by no means trying to steal the thunder of the Final Four Weekend post with my responses to the round table Q&A. But, alas, I did want to weigh in on the football questions circulating our Hokie Blogroll.

So.....
[1] From reader Riggs: "Are we really going to be that good next year? I just don't see us being a top 10 team given last season's offensive output. Tell me that we're overhauling the offense, or we're adding new packages. Give me some hope."

I have to answer this question in two manners. Does "top 10" mean preseason rankings? Or really "top 10" meaning top 10 teams in the nation who will rise to the top and be there all year? Well, then more like five manners, because I'll focus on the top 10 aspects first, then the "offense" we "run" to give him some hope.

First, and don't ever let me seem close to or seemingly in any type of agreement with Heather Dimwit over at the nESPNtwork. But one of her recent "blogs" on the ACC for this upcoming fall did approach, like maybe kinda sorta, a way that I feel about preseason rankings and preseason choices for conference favorites. For the ACC, she essentially calls out the "standards" UM and FSU as lifetime achievement award winners and will be on everyone's radar to be conference champions from now until 2099, just because they're UM and FSU; and calls out the "pick of the week" picks of UNC and Clemdaughter as the hot pick for this year's title; and the "maybe one more year of implementing the new system" pick of GT --- and then concedes that by default the ACC championship will still go through Blacksburg. As reluctantly as one could type words, she relinquishes that until proven differently, boring VT "has to be the preseason favorite" by default. We're boring, not good on O, boring, and boring - yet find a way to win 3 out of 5 championships and get to a fourth championship game....despite young teams, bad offense, etc.

So, before I lose you on the whole "I asked which FFour game is first Saturday and you tried to explain how DirecTV satellites work and how they can sell a package to broadcast all 4 first round games at the same time on different channels and it doesn't matter which CBS region you're in"..... Heather Dimwit's stance there on the ACC is how I feel about preseason rankings as a whole, specifically the top 25, and to this question, the top 10. Here's my preseason top 10 "prediction" that the main polls will have, and reasoning, hopefully you'll see where I was going with the ACC angle from Heather in the previous paragraph:
[top ten teams in no particular order, I'm not predicting rankings, just the 10ish teams I think will be in the top 10]
*UFlor - they're good. Tim Godsend is coming back, they'll find another Harvin.
*OU - they're good too. Bradford is back. Idiot. Shoulda taken the millions.
*OSU - "but they're Ohio State" [see UM and FSU analogy]
*UTex - they're good too with Colt coming back, but a little bit of UM and FSU analogy here.
*USC - half "but they're USC" [with a horrid weak conference schedule] and half, they're good.
*'Bama - considered overachievers last year, expected to be better this year, and how can voters outside of the SEC not know history on 'bama football
*["other" big 12 team here] - TTech or OkST - see UNC and Clem analogy
*Utah - see UNC, Clem, or even GT analogy
*["other guy sneaking in"] - Boise? TCU? - I just vomited a little bit typing that
*["other" SEC team here] - LSU or Ole Miss - LSU, see UM/FSU. Ole Miss, see UNC/Clem. Plus if 'bama opens with a loss, ahem, cough, "someone from the SEC will have to be top 10" right?
*and.....
Which leads me right into the heart of Heather's "thinking" [my term, used loosely]. "Someone from the ACC will have to represent the top 10 opening poll", right? And who is that? Young but improving stalwarts of time UM or FSU? Super trendy up and comers UNC or Clem? Super super duper trendy new system taking over the world pick GT?.........or, just the team that wins what they need to, including conference championships, conference championship games, and now even BCS bowl games......."someone has to be up there from the ACC", so why not VT? So, I think if the question is, is VT a "top 10" team meaning they'll be preseason #8-11ish. Sure, they will be, by default because someone from the ACC will be up there. I think GT will be closely ranked below us and will take our spot if we lose to 'bama to open, or we'll take 'bama's spot and GT will take ours if we win over 'bama to open. Because, "they're has to be someone from the ACC up there" is a rule. Check the voting handbook, see Chapter "Voting on Preseason Polls", Section "East Coast Bias".

Do I think VT really is a top 10 team? I refrain from answering that until the game in the GA dome. Because, as the second part of the initial question suggests - we clearly have worries on offense. And by worries on offense, I don't mean we're worried that our athletes are inferior to any opponent we'll face in athleticism, I mean we're worried about the situations that our athletes will be put into by offensive playcalling, schemes, and "coordinatorship". I'll leave it at that. I can't give reader Riggs hope. I think we have top 10 athletes on the roster. Do I think these athletes comprise a top 10 team? I'm worried I'm coming off here as negative-Nancy....

If we're (4-0) to start the year on September 26, with wins over 'bama, 'braska, Marshall, and the U - then yes I feel we should at that point be in the top 10. I actually prefer to start the season ranked 18-22 and be on the radar, and then move up.

[2] From Beer Control Offense: "Are you concerned about the lack of depth of quarterback? How many significant snaps do you think VT's back up quarterback will get?"

No. I'm not concerned about the lack of depth. If a team is to win their conference, be a top 10 team, get to a big bowl, win a big bowl, or [gasp] win THE big bowl - then everything has to go right. If this is in fact our year, it will be in large part due to the fact that Tyrod Taylor plays the whole year and plays as well as we think he can. I hope that the back ups get ZERO snaps, except for mop up. Which, inherently in itself means they are still insignificant. If Tyrod goes down and we're in a heap of trouble at the QB position - everyone, probably including us bloggers - will write this year off as another young year, we'll be great next year with another year of Evans and Williams, and the D will be stellar next year! Translation, I think we are not top 10, nor top ACC, without Tyrod. So in the context of us being REAL good, I'm not concerned about the lack of depth. Because our depth means nothing in regards to a truly successful big time program's success. [see UFlor without Timmy boy, OU without Sammy, UTex without Colt, etc.]

I don't mind the occasional gimmick play with Boone or Davis running a modified Wild Turkey, against the right opponents at the right point in the game. Run it against Marshall and Duke to set up plays against the U, 'braska, GT, etc. Don't run it on 4th and goal from the 2 in an important, close game, when everyone in the stadium ["everyone" includes the other team's defense] knows that the only play you run from that formation is Boone in the 2/B gap on the left side, after a play fake to the man in motion from left to right.

And, as a non-Wild Turkey QB future, I see JuJu > Davis for probability [for now, until we see Davis play] as a future QB starter - so I don't mind him getting some "meaningful" snaps in games occasionally either. But again, if any of the talk in my answer to #1 above is to come to fruition, Tyrod can't go down, at all. So I'm not worried about depth. I'm not thinking about Tyrod's ankles/knees at all, I promise. /pray

[3] What position do you think is most important to the Hokies on the defensive side of the ball this spring? Are there any young players who will step up during spring on that side of the ball?

I have two answers for the first part of this question. First, I can't say much more than BCO to give a true answer to the question. The only "worry" [term used loosely] I have on our D is at linebacker. They will be fine by game 5, unfortunately this means they'll be ready for Duke and BC, having already played 'bama, 'braska, and the U. Our secondary is always second to none, see current NFL rosters and recent draft days for VT secondary in the league. And, despite being a no-name crew except for a select few [Moore, Adibi the first, etc.], our D line is always great against the run and forces teams to pass. Which in turn, in a self-fulfilling prophecy, makes our secondary know it's 3rd and 8 and a 10-yard out is coming, and they pick it for 6, and our secondary is second to none. [which is funny to say in the first place, our secondary is second to none, except the first-ary?]

So, in agreement with EBJ/BCO, the only "worry" I have as the most important position on defense is at linebacker. But, they'll be fine, they always are. They lack star power [Adibi ^ 2 or V. Hall], but they were recruited for a reason. Breakout star young guy prediction: I have to take the chalk here and take the most experienced in Rivers. He's only a r-soph, but in his limited play time he always seems to be in the right place. This is your spot in this system, stay there, do your job, do it right. You're not a star, you're a part of a machine. The machine is stronger than the sum of its parts. [hence, Bruschi and Vrabel have careers and rings and the likes of Lavar Arrington and Jevon Kearse have some highlight reel hits and no careers or rings to speak of].

The second answer here, for most important position on defense, is an easy answer. I'm being half funny here and 2/3's serious. Wait, that doesn't add up. I figured I could sneak it in, after all, 5 out of every 4 Americans have trouble with fractions. The most important position on our defense is on the sidelines wearing a headset and a 2-button VT polo shirt. Bud MF'ing Foster. Our defense will be fine. I promise.

[4] What change would you make to college football's spring football system?

Umm, it's fine? I don't want to open the argument for more practice vs less practice. More practice, good, more learning. More practice, bad, more injuries. Less practice, good, less injuries. Less practice, bad, less learning. And I won't even get into inter-team scrimmages or travel or monies.

I'm getting a mini-fall-weekend on the 25th. Me and Mrs. HokieJayBee have a sitter for boy HokieJayBee, and a hotel room in B'burg on Saturday night. I'm going to try to find the bottom of a bunch of schooners, phatty mugs, weavers, rails, and jagerbombs that night. It's like a taste of football Christmas in April. Wish me luck.

[5] From College Game Balls: "What kind of music do you think the team is bumping in the locker room? And is Beamer getting down? I know the '99 team was big into Method Man and Dr. Dre."

I don't think I know what kind of music the team is bumping to. I do know. And in fact, since I have Sirius satellite radio in the truck, and I can see the artist listed for every song I ever listen to, I KNOW one guy who is bumping in the locker room. No matter what station I'm on, the song is titled, "SONG TITLE", and the artist is "ARTIST featuring 'Lil Wayne". So, no matter the genre,... the Game featuring 'Lil Wayne, TI featuring 'Lil Wayne, Pink featuring 'Lil Wayne, 'Lil Wayne featuring 'Lil Wayne, Justin Timberlake featuring 'Lil Wayne, Garth Brooks featuring 'Lil Wayne, Linkin Park featuring 'Lil Wayne, Metallica featuring 'Lil Wayne, Sting featuring 'Lil Wayne, Sonny Bono featuring 'Lil Wayne, Bach featuring 'Lil Wayne, some church choir from Oregon featuring 'Lil Wayne, etc. ---- I know one guy they're bumping to in the locker room.

I seem to think this Beamer Dance Off is some sort of reward for the players. Beamer, on Thursday before Saturday match-up with TEAM X in a big game, the team is screwing around, the coaches are pissed, losing the team's focus,........"quit that lolly gagging you lazy fVcks, quit screwing around!!!! Tell you what, focus up here tonight and tomorrow at the walkthrough, and I'll let you bump whatever you want to in the locker room after the game and I'll even bounce with you on camera if we kick the sh!t out of TEAM X!!!!" Enormous roar, sudden team focus, big win. Dancing Frankie Beamdog.

I type a lot.

BCO's Final 4 Picks

Been really busy, this will be a shorter post than I would like but, what can you do? I promise to have a beer post on Sunday, news and possibly my new homebrew recipe. BCO misses game 1 due to my daughter's violin concert. Yes, a 3 year old can take violin and wreck one's $EC football Championship or Final 4 viewing wants.

One Shining Moment ....

From BCO Pix2

The Final 4, who wins, the BCO will measures 'em up based on a 6 categories (scale 1-5 for each category.)

Criteria
  • Offense - good and clutch rates high
  • Defense - can they lock 'em down and tough
  • Intangibles - ummm, ida know are they play say a home game?
  • Beer - Craft brewing in the state, mo' local the better.
  • Wiminz - general rep of campus hotties
  • General Bias - does the BCO like 'em
No coaching rankings, all 4 are elite basketball minds, pretty much a draw unless Roy Williams lays another egg like last year vs Kansas.

Game 1

UConn
From BCO Pix2
  • Offense - slightly above average, a lil better now than when Dyson first went out. 3.5
  • Defense - Thabeet and Adrian send a lot of shots back at ya, misses Dyson here too, but not as much as on O. 4.5
  • Intangibles - winning for Calhoun, they all got paid by him too, so stand up strong. 4
  • Beer - ehhh, 1 of the worst beers states in the Northeast. 2.5
  • Wiminz - state public school is good, northeast is bad. 3.5
  • General Bias - Calhoun is a northerner prick, sister lives in the state so I will be nice. 2
Total: 20

vs

MissAgain St
From BCO Pix2
  • Offense - lots of players who are solid to good, no stud. careful with the ball. 3.5
  • Defense - Outstanding, tempo controlling, deep. 4.5
  • Intangibles - playing at home, focused. 5
  • Beer - Bell's, Founders, Jolly Pumpkin, best in the midwest only behind Colorado, Cali and Oregon nationally. 5
  • Wiminz - state public school is good, midwest is ok. 4
  • General Bias - Indifferent, though the BCO did almost apply there in h.s. for some unknown reason. 3
Total: 23

Game 2

UNC
From BCO Pix2
  • Offense - As good as any team in 20 years, 6 guy could legitamately score 15+ any game, half do. inside, outside, transition, half court, with multiple options for each. 5
  • Defense - not great but impressive vs OU. Definitely getting better. 3.5
  • Intangibles - Hansbrough, Ellington, Green and Lawson all came back for a shot to go out with a ring. 4
  • Beer - Not great, but getting better. Almost on campus Top of the Hill is good, Pisgah brewing saves the state's ass, I will be generous. 3
  • Wiminz - Very, very good, lots of grade A talent on Franklin Street, often in sundresses. 4.5
  • General Bias - got no problem with UNC, hate the calls they get, but I like the campus. 4.5
Total: 24.5

vs

Nova
From BCO Pix2
  • Offense - spread em, attack the rack, outside shooting, only 1 post guy. 4
  • Defense - small, but quick, tough, strong, switching everything. UNC will have to earn it. 4.5
  • Intangibles - a little more than happy to be there, lots of seniors. 3.5
  • Beer - Good stuff all throw the state, Victory, Weyebaucher, etc. Strong. 4.5
  • Wiminz - small, northeasternish, city school, I am sure their are some but avg at best nationally. 2.5
  • General Bias - fun team to watch, tough and fights for respect vs more well known conference team. 4
Total: 24

Saturday's Predictions

MissAgain State pulls the upset vs UConn 64-58 in game 1.
UNC wins vs Nova in the 2nd game in a close 1. 82 - 77.

Monday's Prediction

Not a commonly known fact, but getting tickets for the Championship game is far easier than the Semi's (right Ryan and Kiker.) Basically, the fans of the losers on Saturday dump their tickets (sorta like Clemson fans use to do after the play in game in the ACC tourney before Purnell got there.) Well if MSU gets there, those tickets will be HOT and the Monday game much more so than the Saturday game really could be full of Green. Back in December UNC hammered MissAgain State in Ford Field by 35 as part of the ACC/big1+10 Challenge. Since then MSU has gotten a lot healthier and the youngens aren't green anymore. This potential game will be a lot closer. It will come down to who imposes whose will on the other.

UNC will win in a low scoring game by their standards in tight fashion, say 76-71. Redeeming the ACC a bit for the lousy tournament performance.
